After a year of training, I have just been certified as an International Expert in Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) at the local level through a governance and market-based approach for resilient landscapes. This training was organized by the Swedish Forest Agency in partnership with the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) and the Eco-Innovation Foundation.
« During this year, I learned a great deal. The market is a motivating factor for communities that restore their forests. For a Forest Landscape Restoration project to succeed, the involvement and interest of all stakeholders are necessary. If the interests of everyone are taken into account, then they will roll up their sleeves and get involved. »
LOCOFOREST is an international training program offered by the Swedish Forest Agency in partnership with the Stockholm International Water Institute and the Eco-Innovation Foundation since 2021.
« This program is built on the conviction that large-scale restoration of degraded forest landscapes is only possible if smallholders, local communities, and local businesses become active agents of change in the forest restoration process. »
This program targets mid-career professionals occupying key positions in forest restoration, coming from governments, universities, NGOs, and the private sector. The program lasts one year, and participants are expected to dedicate 20% of their working time to it. It includes a four-month online course with supporting webinars and a two-week workshop in Sweden, along with immersion visits to Senegal and Togo.
« Following this practical and theoretical training, I developed a change project focused on the restoration of the Nyamusisi Reserve (Idjwi, South Kivu province in DRC) through the development of a coffee value chain by the communities living near this reserve, the last sanctuary of the Blue Monkeys. »
Heartfelt thanks to WRI for recommending me for this course, and to my manager Peter Ntaganda for his support and guidance throughout this training.
